The introduction class looks at questions on what is Adaptive Reuse and why is AR so important in todays world. AR Definitions. The current significance of building adaptation and its difference to building maintenance, problems and opportunities/ advantages and disadvantages in AR.

CT_- Constructing Change, This class will look at broader meanings of change, how change can be seen as the center of all design interventions. The class will look at the history and current use of change and how this can impact change in the built environment.

“Adaptability and environmental performance” and “Influences on adaptation versus redevelopment”.

Reasons for adapting buildings and elements of the building, as well as a buildings inherent adaptability.

The cultural, technical and regulations on conservation, preservation and intervention- criteria. Issues on listed buildings (National Parks Service) and the secretary of the interior’s standard on the treatment of historic properties.

Guest: Ronald Onorato, Professor URI, commissioner on the Rhode Island Historic Preservation and Heritage commission, member of the National Register of Historic Places Review Board.

CT_ ISSUES OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT:

General issues on urban development will be presented and discussed, such as the philosophy of smart growth and other (international) related urban fields that are close with our focus in “adaptive reuse” (new urbanism, resource Stewardship, land preservation, non- urban sprawl, urban preservation,..).
